I Can’t Believe They Actually
Laughed At My Music

      Before mastering the information you’re learning about, I used to slug it out for hours, even DAYS on a song. It was painstaking, sweat-it-out work. I would constantly be bitterly frustrated when I didn’t have any good song ideas. But I would keep going and eventually finish a song.

      I was always scared of what people would say when I showed them. I was worried that they would hate it, and I’d feel terrible.

      You may already know, when you write a song and show it to people, you are put in a highly vulnerable position.

      You’re really putting yourself out there, because if your song is rejected, it hurts like crazy.

      Anyway, the big moment would come when I would sit everyone down have them listen, effectively putting my “baby” that I’d worked so hard on, out on a very vulnerable limb.

I Was Utterly Devastated…

      How utterly devastated do you think I felt when my closest friends sat there in an awkward silence, offering no words of encouragement at all?

      And this was the best of my responses!

      I would sit there trembling, silently begging for someone to mutter something positive, but on most occasions my own friends and family would begin having conversations about completely unrelated topics while my song was still playing!

      And at times it was worse… Sometimes my song was seen as some kind of joke, and yes…I was actually laughed at…

      These were really low moments for me. I was trying oh so hard. I was working my butt off to develop all the skills I thought a songwriter needed to master. And still, everytime I put myself out there I got the same response. “Geoff, I’m sorry buddy, but this song stinks…”

      My dream of course was to write songs that moved people. Songs that were so good I’d have massive success in the music industry. And yes… like many songwriters, I too had plans for dominating the world with my music.

      But in these terribly distressing moments of feeling humiliated by my creations, nothing seemed further away than the huge success that I craved.

      Luckily for me, right at the point when I was about to give up completely, something happened that changed everything…

One Day Something Completely Unexpected
But Utterly Amazing Happened

      There is one day that I mark as the turning point in my songwriting career. In fact, if this strange event didn’t occur, I definitely wouldn’t be telling you this story today.

      It happened in early 2001. Back then I was spending most of my spare time writing songs with other musicians. I figured that the more I wrote songs with others, the more I would learn and I would improve my songwriting this way.

      At the same time I was also reading a tremendous amount of books and articles on songwriting, without much luck. (Soon you will find out why these methods weren’t working)

      While I was making small improvements here and there (nothing dramatic) I wasn’t really moving towards what I really wanted to achieve – the ability to write amazing songs and the success that came with that ability.

The Day That Changed Everything

      On a bitterly cold and rainy day I drove up a long, windy road to a “friend of a friend’s” music studio. I was referred onto this gentleman by a friend who insisted that I meet him because he was an absolute genius with a guitar. "You'll learn many things just from watching him play", my good friend said.  

      It turns out that he was much more than that.

      Mr X (using “Mr X” for respect of his privacy) absolutely blew my mind with his incredible guitar playing, singing, and most of all, the way he effortlessly put together the most irresistible passages of music… I tell you… this session is still vivid in my mind it was so unbelievable.

       Mr X was gifted. A real natural. And no surprises… he’d had some big success. The thing is: being a successful songwriter wasn’t what he craved. He already had a great job, and simply played for fun.

      And here I was busting my guts to get good at this songwriting thing, and he was an absolute master without even trying!

His Songwriting Was Simply Breathtaking...

      I watched with my jaw dropped as he gracefully moved through stunning idea after idea. I would think to myself, “he’s definitely been working on this song idea for at least a couple of months”.

      But when I asked him how long he’d been working on it, he would reply, “What do you mean? I made that up just then!”

      I’m positive that in the session he created enough “golden” ideas for an album that would be considered a brilliant masterpiece.

      He then showed me his lyric book which contained some absolutely breathtaking lyrics. The kind of lyrics that gave me goose bumps just from reading them.

      Imagine for a moment the feeling you get when you watch a really great movie as it comes to a spine-tingling climax. This was the feeling his lyrics were giving me, and they were just words on a page!

      This guy just “got it”. He had this songwriting thing nailed. And I was desperate to know what his secrets were.

      I began to ask questions...

Why was he able to create so freely and
with so much quality?

      As he answered the question I threw at him, I realized the answers weren’t what I was expecting. His advice was almost the complete opposite of what the so called “songwriting experts” were telling me in the countless books and articles I’d been reading.

      Yet he was able to write songs in a way that my words could never do justice to.

      What was going on here?!

      I asked my new friend to help me write some music in his unique way.

      So he gave me some quick tips, and we began playing. Well, I’m not going to lie and say that what I wrote was amazing… but I did notice an immediate difference.

      It felt effortless and freeing. And I noticed that good ideas began simply “coming to me” instead of trying desperately hard to discover them.

      He then gave me some tips on the way he writes lyrics.

      I gave this a shot too, and once again, it felt much more natural… enjoyable… and the results surprised me. With just a few “tweaks” to my approach I had easily written my best lyrics yet, and it was completely effortless.

This Was Exciting News!

      I was getting excited.

      This was huge. I felt like I’d come to a turning point. After all the fruitless years of bitter struggle, I finally felt like I was on the right track.

      I drove home literally shaking with excitement. As soon as I got home I pulled out my guitar once again and began writing, using the same techniques that my gifted friend had taught me.

      In less than an hour I wrote easily the best song I’d ever written.

Then Something Even Bigger Happened

      This experience was so enlightening. I would have never believed that such a big change could occur simply by changing a few small things in my approach.

      It was like a golf player who had a terrible “slice” problem being told to “move his hand a little further up the club”. And after this change the player immediately began striking impressive, long, and deadly straight drives.

      With this marvelous day came a realization. And this realization was even bigger than the massive gains that I’d already made.

      In fact, this was the biggest realization of, dare I say it, my life!

3 Years Intense Research Driven By A Single Question… ...How Does Songwriting Genius Happen?

      This life changing event sent me on my mission to uncover the secrets of the worlds most gifted songwriters. I began to research…

      I started by inviting more highly talented songwriters to write music and lyrics with me. I watched them like a hawk as they created. I asked questions. I wanted to know everything about the way they wrote music and lyrics, and why it worked so well.
